ーYou’ve been composing your own songs since M, correct? What made you decide to start writing songs?

Well, that’s a good question. I wasn’t particularly interestedーor uninterestedーin doing everything myself. I never really thought about it that way, anyway. For “M,” we gathered up some songs and listened to maybe 10 or so demos like we usually do, and none of them really spoke to me. Of course, I’d explained what I was looking for prior to this. It was just, something wasn’t right. Now that I think about it, it might’ve been something like, “Oh, maybe it would be faster to just do it myself.” Yeah. I wasn’t like, “Ooh, let me do it!”

ーDid you ever have a feeling this would happen someday?

No, not really. I never thought it was super important for me to start writing original songs on my own, I guess. It doesn’t have to be me, but it also doesn’t have to be a song someone else wrote, either. I want to go with whichever one is best at the time. With “M,” it just so happened to be the melody I wrote that fit the best.

ーI see. I do think there’s a big difference between wanting to write a song and actually writing it, though. Did anything happen once you started? Was it a struggle?

No, nothing like that. You see, nothing’s good when you know too much. There are some things where it’s better to not know enough. Lyrics, too. I feel like I was able to write lyrics more honestly before, because I didn’t know anything and didn’t have anything to be afraid of. Now that I’ve been writing them for 3 years, there are a lot more things I’m concerned about.

ーSo you’re saying, you still don’t know what to be afraid of when composing a song?

Right, because I’m not knowledgeable enough to ask myself if it’s any good. (laughs) I still haven’t agonized over that yet.

ーYou really did just dive right into writing songs, huh?

Yup! If I learned more I think I’d start worrying about whether it’d be weird to go with a certain chord. I don’t understand any of it at all right now, so it’s all fine to me (laughs)

ーWhen you’re writing music, do you ever hum an idea to flesh it out or anything like that?

No, I write music on my Mac.
